My friend and fellow RPCV Muff Singer died January 16th after a five year bout with ovarian cancer. SHe served in the Philiipines in the late 60s teaching children of the employees and prisoners at the Iwahig Penal Colony on the island of Palawan. She was an extraordinary woman who wore many hats: She was active in the Civil Rights Movement, until her death an important resource for the United Farm Workers, activist in the California Democratic Party, and author or more than 50 books for children. She was also modest to a fault and probably would have been embarrassed by the SRO turnout at her memorial service here in Los Angeles which included LA's Mayor and her former employer Congressman Howard Berman. If any of you knew her, I am sure her husband Rick Tuttle (former Controller of LA and now head of UCLA's International Centre) and daughter Sarah, a student at Berkeley, would want to hear from you. Knowing Muff, I am sure she indelibly effected the lives of those she taught in the Phillipines. You could email them at muffsinger@aol.com.
