I am looking for the history relating to a change to the Peace Corps application. The application used to state that Volunteers are not to be involved in any intelligence activity for five years following service. This is no longer in the application. I would like information on when, why, and by whom that was changed. I would appreciate any information.

Thanks!

Step six of the Peace Corps Application Process is "Legal Standards of Eligibility for all Applicants" which includes demonstrating compliance with the requirement that the applicant have no prohibited association with U.S. intelligence activities before an applicant can be cleared for Peace Corps service. See the US Peace Corps Web Site for more details at:

Legal Standards of Eligibility for all Applicants

Quote:

The Peace Corps has established legal standards of eligibility for all applicants. Please note that the following circumstances may affect your eligibility and will require clarification and documentation before you can be cleared for Peace Corps service:

marital status

dependents

previous arrests and convictions

financial obligations (e.g., home mortgage payments, child support, student loans)

bankruptcy

past association with U.S. intelligence activities

current obligations to the military

Finally, the Peace Corps requires information from you that will be submitted to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation for a background check, along with an impression of your fingerprints. A package will be sent out from Placement with the necessary forms that need to be completed. The package will be customized to your personal situation and should be returned to the Legal office.

Best Regards,
