Yesterday I was nominated for a Francophone African country that departs in January. I have never taken French, by my recruiter thought the post sounded perfect otherwise. I decided to accept, but I have to take 2 introductory courses in French before my departure. I though this would be easy, seeing as I live in university town. The problem is the insane cost, over $500 for each class plus the cost of textbooks. Has anyone else faced this same problem, and do you have any other ideas for a more modest class? Any response would be much appreciated!

I'm surprised that the country training staff doesn't have materials (e.g., CDs) available for this sent to you upon acceptance / clearance.

If you're disciplined you can purchase software or CD language courses that take you to the required level (try the State department approved series by Barron's) You could always supplement these courses with a tutor after completing the basics. I'd recommend going beyond the intro courses and getting to low intermediate level since you have time ... You'll be glad you did ...
