I am writing a book about Alaska native education--and one concern is that educators receive no training prior or during their employment as a teacher in, say, an Eskimo village. I would like to include how the Peace Corps trains volunteers to be successful in other countries--the fact that they are trained so that they can "hit the ground running" so-to-speak--and be at least somewhat acclimated to the people, the culture and location. I am seeking info as the basic training curriculum (be it for Bolivia or Thailand) as well as a general idea of how much it costs to train a volunteer. My premise is that if we can do this so that PC volunteers can be successful in a village in Africa, we certainly should be able to devise a program to train people working in villages with Alaska native populations. Appreciate any help. Thanks!

VISTA volunteers have been sent to serve in Alaska and I believe that their cultural training was comprehensive. I am not sure the best way to locate such records. You might want to contact the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and see if they had training contracts during the 1960's.
