I have two friends in the Peace Corps and would like to send them something they need or would want. One friend is in Ukraine and the other is in Tanzania. What can I send them? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I was in Africa and loved it when I got anything, but especially if that anything included Kool-Aid and magazines that dealt with American culture, i.e. "Sports Illustrated" or "Rolling Stone". Things like that. Don't send cookies or anything that could possibly crumble, rot, attract roaches, etc. An old roommate of mine actually sent me a can of peas and a can of salmon because it used to be a staple of mine back in the states. After a year and a half in Africa, it tasted absolutely divine! Good luck. They will really appreciate anything you'll send them.

I also enjoyed koolaid and magazines. I would add to your list various spices and seasoning packets (fajita, meatloaf, etc..) and the seasoning packets from mac&cheese, noodle/rice a roni. Don't send the rice or noodles unless they can't be found in their host country. Ground pepper could not be found where I was.

Toothbrushes, disposable razors, Seed packets for gardening are also much appreciated.

Also music CDs/tapes--I mostly enjoyed recordings of my local favorite radio station. Mixed tapes with newer music is great. Just make sure you know what kind of music they like.

also, you might send anything that you send inside of ziplock bags. they can be recycled by your pcv friends & have many uses.sometimes we'd have candy, like m&m's sent, but they'd be inside of double ziplocks & then inside a tupperware (was like GOLD)!
