i lived in africa the first six years of my life, thanks to my dad being the director of the peace corps in ghana & liberia. anyone who has an idea of a way for me to get more information about his peace corps experience, please respond. i'm lucky enough to have some of my dad's personal folklore in writing and before he passed, he shared so much of it with me of; his peace corps experience and my first years in life. i pray, i wish, that there is someone who can still give me a bit more of my dad. my father became even more of a phenemonal writer about his life and travels after africa. and i would like to add to his legacy.
his name is J Dale Chastain

I have a copy of a paper entitled "Primer for Trainers" it was written in January, 1978 by J. Dale Chastain and Arlene Schindler. I don't know if that's your dad but perhaps if you Google Arlene Schindler you might get a lead

Phillip & Cheryl DeSautell,

Dale picked Cheryl and me up from a cancelled Malawi Program in September of 1969. Since I was one of the very forst "technical" volunteers, with no college degree, we would not have otherwise had a place in Peace Corps. It was a life altering event for us. Dale went on to be the inspiration in my life that kept me plugging away in Engineering school at The University of Texas at Austin. Without Dale Chastain we would not be who and what we are today.

Our love to him and all those who loved him also.

Hello,
I was the PCV secretary in Liberia in 1969, working with Dr. Gaymon, the director, and Terry Hamilton, his assistant, in the Monrovia office. I remember Dale Chastain very well. He had a large personality, a great smile, and was sociable with the volunteers.
I'm in touch with many volunteers from that time. Victoria, if you send me your email address, I can give you contacts.
I found this website because I'm looking for Arlene Schindler, who worked with Dale in Monrovia, and who I traveled with around West Africa.

I was in the Peace Corps Ghana program from 1971 to 1973 and knew J. Dale Chastain, director. I am sorry to hear --years later--that he passed away. I am in touch with my RPCV Ghana group and can try to get the information Victoria, Dale's daughter, is requesting.I would like to get in touch with Arlene Schindler, who grew up only two blocks from me, we discovered. Does anyone know how to reach her?

I have just learned of Dale's death. I was a Volunteer in Liberia from 1968 through 1970; Dale became the country director towards the end of my tour. In 1971 I returned to Liberia to collect my Liberian wife and son and take them to live in Israel. Getting visas and making travel arrangements took weeks, and we had no place to stay. Dale kindly allowed us to sleep in his house for several days while we looked for interim lodging. He was a generous man, and we were grateful to him. May he rest in peace.

I just saw this posting - quite late.

I was Associate Director of PC Ghana 70-72.

I do have written text about the two years.
