My name is Carol Deal, and I am an Adjunct Instructor for Appalachian State Universitys Reading/Language Arts Program. In December 2002, I retired from the Watauga County Schools where I served in various capacities. You may address me as Carol in your correspondence via the CAROL (Content Area Reading On-Line) webpage. Please note that my name being Carol and the name of the webpage being CAROL are purely coincidental.

I have worked in education for approximately 34 years beginning my educational career by attending Appalachian State Teachers College for my undergraduate and graduate study. Varied teaching experiences led me from North Carolina to Pennsylvania and Alabama and then back to Boone, North Carolina to complete the majority of my years as an educator.

When you dont find me preparing for Reading in the Content Area, I can be found with dirt under my finger nails and flowers blooming in my yard. The trees provide adequate shade for enjoying a good book and stitching an alphabet sampler or two. Not far away you will find a furry four legged cat by the name of Sweet Pea. She patrols the perimeter of the property keeping a watchful eye for any intruders. The attack cat rules!

My main focus philosophically has been to have students to perform at their highest level. Teachers are the key energizers to positive student achievement. You are about to enter that phase of your educational careers or you have entered this exciting time in your lives and the lives of your students. I have spent many years working with teachers in an effort to have a positive impact on the lives of their students. My goal is to help you make positive instructional decisions for students as you teach them to read and write in your chosen content areas. carol deal

She found her own way upstairs, wanting to poke about more, see who lived in the other rooms, but was disappointed to learn she and Jean were the only ones living at the house., "What’s Jean’s deal?" she couldn’t resist asking later as she and Lily ate dinner together.

Lily sighed, drumming her fingers on the table. Jean – isn’t like other Night People, nor is she like other humans. She’s always been different and when she was a child her powers were coming to light some people here didn’t take kindly to her. She’s always been solitary, except for Carlos who was her only friend, and didn’t mind her – differentness.

When I was Young and Fair

When I was fair and young, and favor graced me,
Of many was I sought their mistress for to be.
But I did scorn them all, and said to them therefore,
"Go, go, go, seek some otherwhere; importune me no more."
How many weeping eyes I made to pine in woe;
How many sighing hearts I have not skill to show,
But I the prouder grew, and still this spake therefore:
"Go, go, go, seek some otherwhere, importune me no more."
Then spake fair Venus' son, that brave victorious boy,
Saying: You dainty dame, for that you be so coy,
I will so pluck your plumes as you shall say no more:
"Go, go, go, seek some otherwhere, importune me no more."
as soon as he had said, such change grew in my breast
That neither night nor day I could take any rest.
Wherefore I did repent that I had said before:
"Go, go, go, seek some otherwhere, importune me no more."

One guy I did allow to sleep with me somehow
But, he turned out a to be a jerk
Love stinks and just doesn't work...

Pierre had never seen Jean Marie in such a state of despair. His friend had just lost the only lover she had ever known. Pierre knew a great deal about that feeling. Perhaps it was his sensitivity to Jean’s situation that made a difference. Being together seemed to help Jean deal with her feelings of sadness and loss. Pierre told her stories, played games and did crossword puzzles with her. He attentively listened to her sorrow, her anger, and grief. The two already shared a special companionship, which was strengthened even further by their relationship during Jean's sad times.

"He suspected." Whoa. I’ve never heard that tone from him before. Just like ice, just dead. "He suspected Jean wasn’t telling the truth but he didn’t say anything to me. He wanted to ‘let JEAN DEAL with it on her own’ and ‘learn a lesson’ from it. He didn’t want to ‘meddle in our relationship.’ So he never said a word."

A sweet tradition
Cane syrup a sticky treat for fairgoers

By HOLLI DEAL BRAGG
hbragg@statesboroherald.net
The sweet smell wafts through the air, attracting people who either know what the aroma is or just have to find out.

If they ask, they can get a taste of fresh juice from sugar cane squeezed right there at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair. A dollop of sugar cane syrup dabbed on a finger, then popped into the mouth, sends frissons of sweetness over the tongue.

The syrup is available just next door, too, at the Statesboro Kiwanis Club’s Pancake House. And if someone wants it, bottles of the freshly-made cane syrup, transformed from the cane into the delightful concoction right there at the fair, can be purchased to take home.

“We sell two to three cases a night,” said Myrle Anderson, whose husband Thomas Anderson has been overseeing the cane grinding operation at the fair for over 10 years.

“It kind of gets in your blood,” said Billie Jean Deal, who said she has been bottling syrup and selling it at the fair for 40 years. “I just enjoy being here.”

Her late husband, Billy Joe Deal, former magistrate judge for Bulloch County, spent several years overseeing the cane grinding, she said.

The ladies bottling and selling the syrup offer samples of the syrup and cane juice, and occasionally kids might get a chunk of pure, fresh cane.

“Kids still like it, if their parents will peel it for them,”she said.

As the women worked, people stopped the workers making syrup and peppered them with questions.

Thomas Anderson explained the process.

“First you strip the cane, cut it down, take it to the mill, grind it by tractor,” he said. “They used to use a mule, but we got modern.”

“We cook it down at high temperature — 350 degrees,” he said. “It takes two and a half, to two and three quarters of an hour for a 60-gallon boiler.”

It also takes expertise.

“You have to know what you’re doing,” he said. “You have to take it up at the right time.”

Anderson said he learned the process from his father, Redi Anderson, a Bulloch County native.

“When it turns to syrup, we dip it up into a tub and put it on the shelf and bottle it,” he said.

The fires are hot, but Jessie “Preacher” Ellis doesn’t mind. He watches the syrup closely, taking the task personally. Ellis has worked at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair making syrup for the past 22 years.

“My daddy taught me,” he said. “I enjoy it. You meet people, and it’s a challenge. Every year is different. Every boiling is different.”

But the smiles of delight from first-time cane syrup tasters is always the same.

She has lived her life solo, independently and free
No broken hearts behind her, no wedding showers ahead
No man’s razor in her bathroom, nor to God will she be wed

So what the Hell, leave her alone, no call to raise your fist
Still it hurts to be locked out and discarded left off her Christmas list
I came as close as anyone to knowing what she knows
And count myself among the few who have touched her lovely toes

The Dead Woman

If suddenly you do not exist,
if suddenly you are not living,
I shall go on living.

I do not dare,
I do not dare to write it,
if you die.

I shall go on living.

Because where a man has no voice,
there, my voice

Where blacks are beaten,
I can not be dead.
When my brothers go to jail
I shall go with them.

When victory,
not my victory,
but the great victory
arrives,
even though I am mute I must speak:
I shall see it come even though I am blind.

No, forgive me,
if you are not living,
if you, beloved, my love,
if you
have died.

Your jeans are so low your previously non-existent stomach hangs over the waistband and when you sit down we are talking cleavage; your back pockets are half-way down your thighs making your legs appear shorter than they already are and there is so much stuff on your pockets you can never wear the same pair twice because you and everyone else is sick of looking at them; you look like you're expecting a flood because your jeans are too short; maybe the designer looks good but for some reason his jeans make you look worse; there is some weird-looking webby-thing inside your jeans that makes your butt look flatter; your jeans are so full of holes they have to be dry cleaned; you're convinced that your jeans were designed to be worn exclusively by Kate Moss; the ankles of your jeans are cut so narrow and 'skinny' that your thighs look gargantuan in comparison and your lower leg and foot look like a golf club; the designs and signatures on your pockets point downward making your butt appear (gasp!!!) droopy; you have to wash your jeans every time you wear them to get them back in shape; your butt and the back of your thighs actually look bigger than they already are because there are large white areas accentuating them. Yikes!!

It sure sounded familiar to us and, desperate for a pair of super-slimming blue jeans, decided to do something about it! So we started SkinnyJeans® and tackled every possible way to make blue jeans more slimming and flattering:

First, SkinnyJeans® are made from classic denim but with a high nylon/elastane content. This gives them a ‘beefy’ strength to hold you in (no wimpy, gummy stretch here) and creates ‘Memory’—the jeans never stretch out, bag out or lose their shape. (You will not have to wash them every time you wear them.)

Second, the thighs are very 'scooped' out which drastically separates and slims the thighs and pushes the butt out creating a shapely silhouette.

Third, the inseams are drawn forward on the leg making it appear that there is less ‘real estate’ on the front of the leg.

Fourth, the non-stretch cotton pocketing is sewn through from seam to seam so it acts as a restraint holding the entire stomach area in.

Fifth, the fading and shading pattern on the jeans creates an optical illusion front and back that slims the leg. The inside and outside seams are darkened. The sides of the hips are darker so the hips appear narrower. The buttocks are faded slightly but darker on the hip seams and at the top of the thighs creating ‘shape’ and making the back of the legs look slimmer. The front of the leg is slightly faded down the middle making the leg appear longer. Additionally, we incorporate barely-visible whiskering above the natural leg break to make the leg appear longer.

Sixth, SkinnyJeans® come in a barely-boot cut and straight leg; these styles balance the shape of the leg making your thighs appear as slim as possible.

Seventh, the size, shape and placement of the pockets are solely to make the butt appear smaller and shapelier. There is no’ junk’ on the pockets; no designs that make the butt appear droopy or wide, or placement of the pocket so low on the thigh that it shortens the leg; no advertising for the designer and no flashing of price tags.

Eighth, SkinnyJeans® have a medium rise with contoured stretch waistband. No cleavage, no previously non-existent potbelly!

Finally, the high-waters have receded -- SkinnyJeans® come in inseams to 37”!! And because the design is so successfully slimming, we make SkinnyJeans® in sizes 24-32 and 34, 36, and 38.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you
marry me?' The girl said: 'NO!' And the girl
lived happily ever after and went shopping,
dancing, camping, drank martinis, always had a
clean house, never had to cook, did whatever the
hell she wanted, never argued, didn't get fat,
traveled more, had many lovers, didn't save
money, and had all the hot water to herself. She
went to the theater, never watched sports, never
wore friggin' lacy lingerie that went up her ass,
had high self esteem, never cried or yelled, felt
and looked fabulous in sweat pants and was
pleasant all the time.

The end!

Time passes slowly up here in the mountains
We sit beside bridges and walk beside fountains
Catch the wild fishes that float through the stream
Time passes slowly when you're lost in a dream
Once I had a sweetheart, she was fine and good-lookin'
We sat in her kitchen while her mama was cookin'
Starin' out the window to the stars high above
Time passes slowly when you're searchin' for love
Ain't no reason to go in a wagon to town
Ain't no reason to go to the fair
Ain't no reason to go up, ain't no reason to go down
Ain't no reason to go anywhere
Time passes slowly up here in the daylight
We stare straight ahead and try so hard to stay right
Like the red rose of summer that blooms in the day
Time passes slowly and fades away

Hi Jean, how’s your hygiene?
I hope you are well. It’s a pity that API and Peace Corps seem to have such conflicting goals. But all will be resolved and then dissolved in time.
