My daughter is interested in joining the Peace Corps. My wife and I are both excited for her and frightened. What can you advise us? Should we be elated, without reservations? What are the risks volunteers face? On balance, would you advise her to join? Why?

My parents had the same concern. They ended up loving the fact that I served.

When she goes, make her an offer. You will manage a master email list to get her updates/reports out to all of her friends. Then you'll see all her news! And she doesn't have to write separate letters to everyone. She gets a 100-1 return for each update/report she writes. Then when she comes back, give her a bound copy of the total as a memory book.
