Sadly I am passing on the news of Nina's death last month. I was informed by her son that she died peacefully in her sleep, was found by her servant. All those who remember our Ninabai, and her boutiful table will smile to know she left a full fridge!
I have been so fortunate in being able to return to India frequently since my PCV days, if I was in the western region I always made it a point to visit Nina in her prettyseaside bungalow out in Shivaji Park. She would bring out all of her PC photos, memos, bulletins, letters, etc. (you should see her archives!!), we would order beer, she would cook and we would laugh and talk until the wee hours. The last time I spoke to Nina I was in Poona last year and I called her. She remembereed everyone and always asked the whereabouts of so many of us.
I know that many of us have our dear memories of her, and what she added to our lives during our India days of long ago.
If anyone visits Poona, Nina's son Sharouk lives there and manages the restaurant Touche.
It is also with sadness that I tell of the sudden death of Adi Patel, another of PC/India's good friends and former staff member. Adi was our first house guest here in Dhaka, seeing him after 15 years. I visited him and family last April in Poona, and was so saddended to get a message from las August from his wife Dagmar, that he had died suddenly.....such a shock. Adi remained bigger than life, full of joy, pranks and love for everything and everybody.
These two share the history of Peace Corps/Bombay, the memories are so lifelike...I can hear Nina in her kitchen.....I can see big hearty Adi planning his next joke on some naive newly arrived PCV!!!
