Who better to ask than a forum of returned volunteers? I'm in the process of applying to serve in the Peace Corps, and have just a few more things to fill in. The main problem is the section where we get to express a preference for a region; I have no idea what to do. Should I leave it blank and let my selection be based on my qualifications and strengths alone? Or should I specify a preference for a latin-american country since I'm nearly fluent in Spanish (and therefore could 'hit the ground running'), or should I specify the region in which I really really would like to serve (Africa) despite having less cultural and zero linguistic familiarity? I'm just looking for a few good opinions which may help clear the fog before me...
Best to all,
L

Dear L,

I suggest you tick the region box where you would like to serve, Africa. How many Americans, do you think, joined the PC because they had the cultural and linguistics background of the host country? If the PC used this as a major selection factor, we would have no Peace Corps.

Your fluency in Spanish is a great strength as it suggests that you are able to learn another language.

Good luck.
