Hi,
My name is Lauren and I was invited to a program in Peru. I have accepted my invitation to be a health promoter and I just wondered if any RPCV's from Peru or latin America had any advice or guidance they could give me. Thanks |

Hi,
Do it! I went 40 years ago and had the same joys and struggles as everyone else. I could have been a better volunteer, but I was what I was. The life lessons I learned have been great. When our training program had a reunion in 2000 all felt that it was the signature event in the lif of each one of us. The smartest and nicest people I ever met were in my training program. Go with an open and informed mind, recognizing that there will be frustrations and joys. If we each do a small amount, it will add up.
As they said to my at the parochial teachers training school that I taught at, "Que la Virgen bendiga tu viaje."
That's a great think to say to a Jewish guy.

Hi Lauren,
I am also in the middle of the application for a health-related post in Latin America (not due to leave until Jan.), but, I went to Peru last summer to work with a micro-finance organization in Ayacucho. This was set up through a family friend who had served in the Peace Corps there (a long time ago!). I had an amazing time! What part of the country will you be in? The man I worked under is about 85 now and known as a saint in Ayacucho. He also has 8 children that live in all parts of the country. I stayed with them while I was in Lima and one is a travel agent (which made it very easy for me to travel within Peru!)--please please let me know if you want their email's--they can help you in the future or if you ever need someone in Ayacucho or Peru. The man I worked for considers anyone who works for Peace Corps to be his granddaughter. My email is lca@duke.edu if you have any questions.
