Hi. I read about a peace corps intitiative on the Thorntree website. It was a self-help village that was offering accommodation - somewhere near Monkey Bay, I think. We would like to support them during our visit in September but I can't seem to find any information anywhere.

There are several such initiatives set up around the tourist centers in Malawi, though it is very touch and go. For one thing, local conditions make things very patchy in terms of new chiefs or ministers or presidents (Malawi just elected its third). Also, and more importantly, Peace Corps initiatives last only if they are the best. Some die after thier volunteer leaves, giving a lifespan of maybe less than 2 years.

In any event, there are several volunteers in the area, and if this initiative is still active, then the tourist sites around Monkey Bay and Cape Maclear will have some information. So approach it like you would any other tourist adventure and try the hotels and travel agents.
