Hello,
I'm a current PCV serving in Perú. A few weeks ago I was at an art exhibition in the Ancash Museum in Huaraz, where I met a local painter named Miguel Mestanza. Unbelievably talented artist, and even greater guy (you can see some of his work on youtube). Long story short, we exchanged contact information, and yesterday I was able to visit him at his home studio in Huaraz to learn more about his painting. I also learned that he has an interesting connection to the Peace Corps here in Perú..
Back in the early 70's, Miguel was working at a music store in Chincha (around three hours south of Lima), where he became close friends with a volunteer named John Clark (could hardly have a more common name). After John completed his service (approximately 1972-1974), the two of them hitchhiked up through South America, Central America, and across the US to Virginia where John was from. Miguel then flew back to Lima, where his wallet was stollen from him and he lost the contact information he had for John. He has never been able to find him since.
Miguel is one of the most incredible people that I've met, not just here in Perú, but throughout my lifetime of travels. It would be a dream come true for him to be able to contact his friend, and for me to be able to help him out. I know the community has tracked down folks in the past, and I was hoping that you could maybe be a lead.
