Senator Dodd's Bill should not pass. He leaves out volunteers in the bill. The Volunteers make up the program. Volunteers should have safety when they serve. Senator Dodd thinks he is still in the Dominican Republic during the 1960's. The World has changed. 15 Volunteers have been killed, died or are missing since 1996. It is the most important part of helping the program, yet he ignores the needs of volunteers to protect themselves from violence, targeting of American citizens serving in government and refuses to implement or propose preventative measures in safety by providing each volunteer with an another volunteer at his or her site. I strongly recommend other volunteers call your Congressman and Senator stating you want safety at Peace Corps before you want a fourth goal. Two volunteers at every site for safety was in the original proposal. Dodd's staff person cut it out. They did not serve in Peace Corps.

Please contact your congressional delegation and/or those Senators and congresspersons already supporting the new Peace Corps legislation. Please ask that SB #2667 be amended to include the following section:
"No U.S. persons receiving funding through this Act shall have any relationship with any
United States intelligence agency or be used to accomplish any other goal that the goals established by the Peace Corps Act."
We must protect the RPCVs; their nonprofits and activities which might be funded
through the passage of this legislation. Thank you.

I just received an email action alert to write to my Senator (Specter) to stop introduction of language into the funding of the Peace Corps that would permit Peace Corps Volunteers to be involved with the CIA and other intelligence gathering agencies. I can't find anything on this site to indicate that is likely. I would work very hard to stop such language if I thought this was a possibility. Aside from my ideological outrage at this possibility, my son is a volunteer in Guatemala, and I believe this type of language would put him at risk. Will someone who knows the current status please post? (29 Nov 02)
