Attacks on Peace Corps Volunteers Found Rising (August 4, 2002)

To the Editor:

Re "Attacks on Peace Corps Volunteers Found Rising" (news article, Aug. 4):

The recent report by the General Accounting Office restated that the Peace Corps' highest priority is the health, safety and security of its volunteers. It noted that there is a comprehensive system for protecting volunteers, including medical care, training to reduce exposure to risks, developing safe housing and work sites, responding to incidents and emergency planning. The agency is undertaking several major initiatives to reduce risks for volunteers.

One assault against a volunteer is one too many. Nonetheless, among the 7,000 current volunteers, recent data show no increase in the rate of major physical assaults over the last two years.

With the support of Congress, we are enthusiastically pursuing President Bush's call to double the number of volunteers in the next five years. But we will not put a single volunteer in harm's way.

GADDI H. VASQUEZ
Director, Peace Corps
Washington, Aug. 6, 2002
