University names Distinguished Black Marylanders for 2002 February 06, 2002
A member of TU’s Department of Psychology faculty, two TU students and a retired member of the Office of Diversity Resources staff will be among the 15 Distinguished Black Marylanders honored at the 19th annual awards ceremony on Feb. 17, 3-6 p.m. in the University Union's Potomac Lounge. (The inclement weather date is Feb. 24.) A reception will follow.
Recipients were selected by a committee of TU faculty members, administrators and students on the basis of their contributions to their professions and to the African-American community.
The 2002 Distinguished Black Marylanders include:
Evangeline Wheeler is associate professor of psychology at TU, where she has taught graduate and undergraduate courses. Born into a family of educators in Baltimore, she graduated from Western High School and in 1983 earned a B.S. degree in psychology from Howard University. She was awarded a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991. The next two years would take her to the Central Republic of Africa, where she served in the Peace Corps. She has received TU's Faculty Excellence Award in 1998 and the Student's Choice Most Conscientious Professor Award in 1996. The areas of research that interest her most are cross-cultural psychological differences, psychology of racism, women of color psychology, and memory process. She founded and runs Diva's Den, a monthly book group for black women, serves as a member of the board of the Black Writers Guild of Maryland and regularly supports Doctors Without Borders.
