Vasquez foe to testify at hearing
Vasquez foe to testify at hearing
November 9, 2001
A Peace Corps volunteer group said Thursday that it has persuaded the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to allow a member to testify in opposition to former Orange County Supervisor Gaddi Vasquez at his confirmation hearing for Peace Corps director next week.
The committee confirmed that Vasquez's hearing will likely be Wednesday, but it has not released the witnesses' names.
Opponents say former Peace Corps director Jack Hood Vaughn, who served as director under former President Nixon, will testify.
They cite as reasons for opposing Vasquez's nomination a lack of international experience, his connection with Orange County's bankruptcy and the fact that he was never in the Peace Corps. Despite that, Vasquez is expected to be confirmed by the Senate.
