VASQUEZ VICTORY SOON?

Despite an organized assault from a group of liberal retired Peace Corps volunteers and Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D.- Md.), the Presidents nomination of former Orange County Supervisor Gaddi Vasquez to head the agency appears in good shape. The reason: Vasquez has gotten the blessings of Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd (D.), himself a onetime Peace Corps volunteer and now chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee that oversees the Peace Corps. In response to the charge from former Peace Corps chief Jack Hood Vaughn that Vasquez was "a total rank amateur," Dodd responded, "Presidents by and large should get the nominees they want."
