Mel Martinez is from Orange County, Florida, and was elected as Orange County’s chairman in 1998. This post is an executive post akin to a mayoral position as the post oversees such issues as school overcrowding, the county’s finances, public safety and transportation. Under his administration Orange County reduced property tax rates twice, the first tax rate cuts in the county in 12 years.

Since his election to a four-year term, Martinez embarked on an ambitious program emphasizing public safety, growth management, the needs of children and families, clean neighborhoods, improved transportation and streamlining government.

Martinez co-chaired (with eight others) the Florida Bush campaign and was an outspoken advocate of the Miami relatives of Elian Gonzalez in South Florida. He even took Elian to Disney World for a day.

Gaddi Vasquez is from Orange County, California and up until 1995 served as a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. During Gaddi Vasquez's term of office Orange County lost $1.7 Billion when the county's loan pool declared bankruptcy, and Vasquez resigned from office just ahead of a recall election and a grand jury investigation.

Gaddi Vasquez has been a Vice President of Public Affairs for California Edison Utility company since 1995 and gave $106,000 of left-over campaign funds to the Bush campaign.
