Mchinji, October 23, Mana: Peace corp volunteers working in various sectors in Malawi's economy would help to improve lives of the people of the country, Peace Corps Regional Director for Africa, Henry Mckoy said Tuesday in Mchinji.
McKoy was speaking when he visited Mchinji Mission Orphanage and a women’s group undertaking fish-farming in the area of T.A. Mduwa in the district.
He said Peace Corps volunteers were committed to uplifting people’s lives by working with the community in all fields of development.
McKoy said while in the country, the volunteers would put particular emphasis on sensitising people on crop diversification to boost household food security.
"Malawians need to have balanced diet at all times in order to improve their nutritional status,’’ he said.
People in the area are also involved in afforestation projects to replace trees which have been cut down over the years.
McKoy, asked the volunteers to co-operate with the local people when carrying out their work and to strive to understand their customs and traditions.

McKoy, while in the district also visited Kochilkira and Magawa Health centres.
He also held some discussions with volunteers and government officials on how the Peace Corps programme could be enhanced in the country.
McKoy who is based in Washington, DC, was on a three-day visit to Malawi as part of his orientation tour to several African countries where the Peace Corps scheme exists.
There are 116 Peace Corps volunteers in Malawi working in education, health, environment and human development sectors.
