King lauds US Peace Corps activities

AMMAN (Petra) — His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday received head of the US Peace Corps Gaddi Vasquez, who arrived in Amman Monday in the course of inspecting corps activities in the Middle East.

At the meeting, attended by the Chief of the Royal Court Fayez Tarawneh, King Abdullah paid tribute to the Peace Corps' work in the Kingdom, describing their efforts as enhancing concepts of political stability as well as promoting peace amongst people of different cultures.

The visit came on the heels of last month's American embassy announcement that the Peace Corps' was suspending its mission here because of concerns for the safety of volunteers.

The decision to suspend the corps' activities was taken a day after the US State Department said it would allow nonessential personnel to leave the country in light of security concerns following the assassination of a US diplomat in October.

Activities continue

But in remarks at the meeting with the King, Vasquez emphasised that the group was continuing its activities here, pointing out that Jordan enjoys a climate of security and stability.

Vasquez said various sectors of the Jordanian society have maintained cooperation with the group, enabling members to carry out their humanitarian mission.
