"A Harambee for Hope, Home & Heifers" drew about 200 people and raised more than $22,000 that will help build an orphanage in Kenya and help buy cows for African families. The party was Jan. 3 at Massimo da Milano restaurant in Cleveland.

Caroline Kondrat, a John Carroll University alumna and Peace Corps volunteer, was the catalyst for the event. The school and its Campus Ministry were hosts. "Harambee" is an African word meaning "fund-raiser" or "come together."

In Kenya, one in every eight adults has HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and more than 500,000 children have lost one or both parents to AIDS and related illnesses. Cholera, malaria and malnutrition also are common.

Kondrat also has spoken at area schools to raise funds. Donations still might be sent to Campus Ministry, John Carroll University, 20700 North Park Blvd., University Heights, OH 44118. Checks should be made payable to "A Harambee c/o JCU."
