She graduated in December with a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Dayton, but Kimberly Stachler is more likely to be wielding a machete than a pen for the next 27 months.
The St. Henry resident is an agricultural volunteer, living and training in Panama City, Panama, as a member of the Peace Corps.
"I grew up on a farm in St. Henry," said Stachler, a 1999 graduate of St. Henry High School and the daughter of Joan and Ted Stachler . "This experience gave me the background to become an agriculture volunteer."
A passion for service and an interest in international issues drew Stachler to the Peace Corps.
"Although I was not terribly excited about this placement, if that is what I needed to do to be able to join the Peace Corps, I was willing," said Stachler, whose previous volunteer experiences include Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Suicide Prevention Center of Greater Dayton, where she worked as a hot line volunteer.
"And now that I am here and have begun to learn more about the agriculture program itself, I am very excited."
Peace Corps volunteer positions fall under six categories: health, education, business, community development, environment and agriculture.
Attempts are made to assign recruits according to their interests and preferences, but assignments are typically based on host countries' needs.
"We are in 70 countries at the invitation of those countries," said Scot Roskelley, a Peace Corps spokesman in the Chicago regional office. "They identify what things they want our volunteers to do."
Stachler said the agricultural program in which she will be working is called permaculture. More Information on Peace Corps Recruitment
