Peace Corps Graduates Programs in Poland; U.S. Ambassador Hosts Closing Ceremony in Warsaw

Washington, D.C., June 7, 2001 -- After eleven years of working side-by-side with the citizens of Poland, the Peace Corps has announced it will close its programs in that country later this year. In recognition of the progress volunteers have made in helping Poland advance its development goals, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Christopher Hill will host a closing ceremony reception at his residence in Warsaw on June 8, beginning at 1:00 p.m. To honor the occasion, nearly 70 former Peace Corps volunteers will return to Poland to join the last group of 61 volunteers, who will complete their service in September. A number of high-ranking representatives in the Government of Poland have also been invited to attend.

The first group of Peace Corps volunteers arrived in Poland in February 1990, following the signing of an agreement between the governments of the United States and Poland. Due to the tremendous progress in Poland over the last decade, Peace Corps volunteers, through their work with Polish schools and organizations, have been able to achieve the development goals set forth by the government of Poland.

The ceremony will be attended by representatives of the U. S. Embassy and Peace Corps/Poland staff and volunteers. Charles Baquet III, Acting Director of the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C., will also attend the ceremony.

Peace Corps volunteers and Peace Corps staff will be available for media interviews from 2-4 p.m. at the ambassador’s residence in Warsaw. If you are interested in setting up an interview, please make arrangements through the U. S. Embassy Public Affairs Section at 202.628.3041, extension 2088.

Since September 1990, more than 950 Peace Corps volunteers have served in communities throughout Poland in programs focusing on English education, environmental education and small businesses development. Currently, over 7,000 Peace Corps volunteers are serving in 78 countries worldwide.
