MEDIA ADVISORY Attention: Assignment Editors, Producers, Reporters
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 20, 2003 – Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez will welcome President Amadou Toumani Touré of Mali to Peace Corps headquarters on Tuesday, June 24. President Touré will visit Peace Corps upon his request to express his country’s appreciation of Peace Corps volunteers. President Touré was sworn in as President of Mali on June 8, 2002, for a five-year term, becoming the first Malian President to assume office in a successful electoral transfer of power. In the early 1990s, President Touré worked with Peace Corps volunteers in the areas of water, health, and guinea worm eradication in the Mopti Region of Mali while presiding over a group dedicated to improving the Malian environment.
President Touré is visiting the United States between June 23 and 27 to participate in the 37th Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which will highlight Mali as one of three featured cultures. President Touré’s visit marks the third head of state to join us at Peace Corps headquarters within the last year. He is the second President of Mali to visit Peace Corps headquarters; President Konare visited in 1998.
