Peace Corps Leadership Changes

Peace Corps Director, Carol Bellamy, resigned in April 1995 to become the new director of UNICEF. According to Chic Dambach, President of the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA), "Carol has done a tremendous job of promoting the Peace Corps, building morale among staff and volunteers, and streamlining the operations in the field. Thanks to her leadership, the Peace Corps is now training and supporting nearly 1,000 more volunteers than it did before her tenure." Deputy Peace Corps Director, Chuck Baquet (RPCV, Somalia) served as Acting Director until late in the summer when the Senate confirmed Mark Gearan's appointment as Director. The NPCA had urged President Clinton to appoint a former volunteer to the position rather than Gearan, who does not have Peace Corps experience. Gearan was formerly Communications Coordinator for the White House.
