Peace Corps adds sexual orientation to non-discrimination policy

PEACE CORPS EQUAL OPPORTUNITY POLICY STATEMENT

As Director, I want to affirm to all Peace Corps employees and Volunteers that no person will be denied opportunities because of his or her race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (over 40), disability, sexual orientation, marital status, political affiliation, or union membership.

Peace Corps is both a federal agency and a vehicle through which American citizens offer needed assistance to people around the world and, in doing so, promote greater cross-cultural understanding between Americans and the people of our host countries. The fulfillment of Peace Corps' mission to foster greater understanding among the world's citizens requires that we adhere to the highest standards with respect to equal opportunity for all Volunteers, employees and applicants. Discrimination based on factors that have no bearing on a person's ability to perform his or her duties is not permitted and will not be tolerated.

As we undertake efforts on behalf of peace and better understanding among the people of the world, all Peace Corps supervisors, employees, and Volunteers have a responsibility to uphold the principles of equal opportunity and non-discrimination. We must work together to ensure that our workplaces, policies, practices and operations are free from discrimination and sexual harassment.

I am committed to a Peace Corps that is a model employer in all respects. In this regard, my concern goes beyond merely avoiding what is prohibited by law. My interest is in making maximum use of the talent, energy, motivation, and creativity that each person brings to Peace Corps. We are privileged to serve the cause of world peace and improved understanding on behalf of the American people. I ask for your commitment to carry out this mission in a manner that reflects the best traditions and highest ideals of the people of the United States.
