The Smithsonian Thanks the Peace Corps on Its 40th Anniversary
Cosponsored with the National Peace Corps Association
Thurs., Sept. 20, 8 p.m.

One of our country's most beloved institutions, the Peace Corps, was founded under President Kennedy's administration at the height of the Cold War as a fusion of youthful idealism and American know-how in the vanguard against Communism. Since 1961 more than 160,000 Americans have spent two life-transforming years working in one of 135 developing countries as Peace Corps volunteers. Once home again, many of them have had a significant impact on this country as social innovators and public servants.

In this compelling evening, former volunteers discuss their Peace Corps experience, its impact on them since their return, and what the Peace Corps' first 40 years have meant to America. The panel discussion is moderated by Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC's Hardball, who was a Peace Corps volunteer in Swaziland. The panelists are: Sen. Christopher Dodd (Dominican Republic); Rep. Christopher Shays (Fiji); George Gedda, Associated Press State Department correspondent (Venezuela); Dina Siber, service director, Exodus Communications, Inc. (Albania); and Karen De Witt, Washington writer and former senior producer of ABC's Nightline (Ethiopia).

General Admission $ 15, Fulltime students with IDs $10.80
Location: S. Dillon Ripley Center Lecture Hall, 1100 Jefferson Dr., SW, Washington, DC.
