The Master's International Program: Public Health

Masters International Program Boston University's School of Public Health was among the first to team with Peace Corps in offering the Master's International Program. It is also the only school in the program offering certificate courses in International Health which not only fulfill 1/3 of the credits necessary for the Master of Public Health degree (16 of 48), but also serve as the perfect introduction to Peace Corps service. Participants in any given certificate course can represent between 15 and 35 countries, allowing for an invaluable exchange of knowledge and expertise, as well as a truly unique opportunity to work with, and learn from, people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.

The Goal: The Master's International (MI) Program at Boston University aims to provide practical public health research, management, and training skills to students for immediate application in Peace Corps service. The joint program is an ideal way to earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree while gaining the international experience necessary to develop a career in the competitive field of international health. With careful planning, the MPH degree can be completed in three full-time semesters (one calendar year).

There are 7 concentrations to choose from within the School of Public Health:

International Health (IH) Environmental Health Maternal & Child Health Health Services Health Law Epidemiology & Biostatistics Social & Behavioral Sciences

Courses within the IH concentration are designed to provide skills that are both practical and relevant to the developing country environment. In addition, MI students will meet many mid-career health professionals from developing countries both within the concentration and through the IH Department's certificate programs. A recommended academic plan for MI students is to begin with either Summer Certificate Program in International Health, which provides a comprehensive overview of the issues faced in the planning and delivery of health-care services, or Management and Finance for International Health .

Benefits:

Up to 8 credits for Peace Corps service via successful completion of a directed study Financial aid and favorable loan terms: MI students receive priority access to the Perkins Loan Regular meetings with returned Peace Corps Volunteers and other to share experiences and prepare for service overseas. Flexibility: MI students can complete one, two, or three semesters of MPH course work prior to Peace Corps service. As well, coursework can begin in Spring, Summer, or Fall

I am a training nurse for Peace Corps in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The current civil war has forced Peace Corps to suspend its activities in this country, hoping to return when the political situation improves afetr the next presidential election in 2005.

Consequently, I have lost my job as the Peace Corps training nurse.

I want to use the opportinity of this "break" to pursue a certificate course in international public health in the United States. Can you suggest the best place to turn to? Thanks for advising.
