US ambassador says his country to assist Kenya

Aug 15, 2001 - BBC Monitoring Africa - Political

Text of report by Kenyan TV on 15 August

US ambassador to Kenya, Johnnie Carson has said his country will assist Kenya in
overcoming the current economic constraints.

He says many sectors faced collapse and that they should be rescued. He made the remarks shortly after officiating the swearing- in of 33 peace corps volunteers at the Agricultural Finance Cooperative Limited in Karen.

[Carson] The US and Kenya have a very good relationship. We wish Kenya well as it deals with [word indistinct] and serious economical problems that it has. We continue to work with Kenya and we will try and work with Kenya to overcome some of these difficulties. And we hope to be able to send many more volunteers here to Kenya as a part of the very good relationship that exists between the US and Kenya. All these volunteers are university graduates. Many of them have advanced degrees and many of them also have years of experience working in environmental fields and in health care fields in the US.

We hope these volunteers would help to work alongside Kenyan counterparts to promote development and progress in the areas in which they are working [end of recording].
