Peace Corps' Future
To the Editor:
The unilateralist and neo-isolationist
tendencies of the Bush administration have
found additional expression in the nomination
of a person to be Peace Corps director who appears to have neither the
professional qualifications nor personal stature required for the job (editorial,
Aug. 24).
At best this is an indication of the low priority the White House gives to one of
the few examples of sustained positive United States engagement in
international development. At worst it signals a strategy to diminish an
institution whose alumni will celebrate its 40th anniversary next month.
Perhaps it is time for Congress to ensure the Peace Corps's survival and
independence from political partisanship by lodging it within an autonomous
federal foundation.
