America Online Time Warner Foundation Awards Peace Packs

Washington, D.C., December 14, 2001—In the spirit of peace, giving and goodwill, the AOL Time Warner Foundation in partnership with the Peace Corps recently presented Peace Packs to 38 Peace Corps Volunteers in 21 countries around the world. Peace Packs are grant awards of one to two computers, software, a printer, up to two years of Internet connectivity, and various peripherals such as digital cameras, scanners and zip drives to increase the capacity of the computers.

Many of the communities in which Peace Corps Volunteers serve lack access to computers; therefore, these innovative packages of information will strengthen the impact of a Volunteer’s work, as well as work to combat the digital divide. This is the second year that the Peace Packs partnership has existed, and the awards are based on advancement of development goals, sustainability and the involvement and commitment of the local community where the Volunteer serves.

Peace Packs were awarded in countries where Volunteers had submitted proposals for unique and innovative ways to integrate information technology to advance health, education, micro-enterprise and other development priorities. Peace Corps Volunteers will use the Peace Packs to teach computer skills and to connect remote communities where they serve to valuable information technology resources.

There were five volunteers from Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Lesotho, and Mauritania in Peace Corps’ Africa Region who were presented Peace Packs totaling $36,700 worth of equipment. Peace Corps’ Europe, Mediterranean, and Asia region had 15 Volunteers from Armenia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Nepal, Romania, Thailand, Ukraine and Western Russia who were presented Peace Packs totaling $93,100. There were 19 volunteers from Peace Corps’ Inter-America and Pacific Region from El Salvador, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Samoa, Suriname and Tonga who received $138,300 worth of equipment.

By the close of next year, the Peace Corps partnership with the AOL Time Warner Foundation will have awarded more than 120 Peace Packs valued at approximately $1,000,000. More than 7,000 Peace Corps Volunteers serve in 70 countries working to teach children, helping to improve health and nutrition of families, bringing clean water to communities and preventing the spread of AIDS and assisting small businesses and non-governmental organizations improve management techniques.
