Senate Consideration of Gaddi Vasquez Nomination postponed until next year

Republican Minority Whip Don Nickles of Oklahoma (in photo above) asked the Senate for unanimous consent this evening to get a confirmation vote for Bush Nominees including Gaddi Vasquez for Peace Corps Director. Below is our coverage of the action in the Senate today on the nominations. For the most current information on the activities of the Senate go to CSPAN at:

Senate Republicans failed to get a confirmation of Bush nominees to the floor for a vote Thursday evening, placing their confirmation on the shelf for the rest of the year. The list of nominees included Gaddi Vasquez for Peace Corps Director.

Minority Whip Don Nickles of Oklahoma attempted to bring the nominations up for a vote at 7 pm using a procedure known as a unanimous consent agreement.

Had Nickles' request been honored, regular Senate rules would have been set aside and the nominations would have been considered.

As of 10 pm this evening, the Senate had not approved Senator Nickles' motion of unanimous consent nor is it expected to. Therefore the Senate is not expected to consider the nominations before it adjourns.

Assuming no action takes place later this evening, the Senate will consider the nomination of Gaddi Vasquez next year.

The Senate next meets Tuesday January 22.
