PEACE CORPS ALUMNI FOUNDATION FOR PHILIPPINE DEVELOPMENT

PCAFPD was founded in 1983 by former Volunteers, staff, and friends of the Peace Corps in the Philippines as a way to continue their commitment to the social and economic development of the Philippines. The Foundation accomplishes this by providing scholarships for exceptional Filipino students who need financial assistance to realize their dreams of attending college in the Philippines. Over the years more than 50 students have received academic scholarships and have completed their studies in fields ranging from engineering and architecture to midwivery and community development. This year, eight students have been awarded scholarships by the Foundation.

The Foundation also publishes a biannual newsletter. The newsletter generally contains articles about past and present scholars, former volunteers, Foundation supporters, and news about the Philippines.

The Foundation is staffed and managed completely by volunteers. There is no paid staff. The board is based in Washington, D.C. where occasional social and/or fund-raising events are held. PCAFPD is an affiliate of the National Peace Corps Association and is recognized as the official RCPV group of the Philippines. In 1999 the Foundation received the Loret Ruppe award for outstanding community service.

The Foundation invites the support and participation of all who share its commitment to Philippine Development. To request more information about the Foundation, make a tax deductible contribution, receive newsletters and mailings, recommend a community contact, or find out other ways to get involved, write to:

To: MAUREEN J. CARROLL
Hi, my name is Ruby Vielgo. I'm a filipino-american residing in Chicago, Il.
I'm writing to you because I want to help my people in my hometown of BANGUED, ABRA--Ilocos,
PHILIPPINES. I ache for my people. There are villages and barrios everywhere in that region. Poverty is one of the biggest problems they face.
I've seen children go to school barefooted. Kids
wore the same torn dingy clothes 4 days in a raw.
Some kids stays home to care for their younger siblings, while their parents go to the farm to gather little foods to seel or to feed their families. I've seen elderlies get sicker and sicker because they can't afford hospitalization
or purchase medicines.
Most of my people are just simply helpless.
For so many years, Ive always always wanted to help my people in my hometown. I want to restore their hopes. Offer them some opportunities to live abetter life and a more productive future.
I'm hoping that the PEACE CORPS can offer them the help they need. Most of my people are smart and very industrious. But job opportunities are
very rare or non at all. What I want is a charitiy
donations for my people. I want the PEACE CORPS to somehow donate foods, clothings, and medicines
to them.
I also want my hometown province to have a
DIALYSIS CENTER.
And I want my people to learn forestry. To plant hundreds maybe thousands of trees to help
prevent floodings. Every year, their crops get
destroy by tropical hurricanes or typhoons.
Please I beg for your mercy to help my people
of ABRA. Please give them hopes and opportunities.
If not, if the Peace Corps is not capable to do such things. Please help me find a way to look somewhere else. Give me some ideas or other options. Hope to hear from you soon w/ a good news. Many thanks and God bless.

sincerely,
