REMARKS BY GADDI VASQUEZ

Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building

February 15, 2002

Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen. It is a great honor for me to have just moments ago, taken the oath of office to be the Director of the Peace Corps. It is a great honor. It is a great privilege for me.

Mr. President, I want to thank you for the faith that you have placed in me, nominating me as the sixteenth Director of the Peace Corps. It gives me great, great pride to be the first Hispanic-American Director of the Peace Corps.

I also want to thank very especially two individuals who are very near and dear to my life, who have been supportive throughout the process of the growing and building of a career in public service. They have been with me every step of the way and that’s my son, Jason, and my wife, Elaine, who are with us here today as well. (Applause)

I also want to give very special thanks to the President for clearly articulating and making my job even more exciting during the State of the Union Address. As you all know he announced the expanded presence of the Peace Corps and called for the doubling of the number of Volunteers over the next five years. Mr. President, I am anxious to follow your lead to emphasize the importance of volunteerism, especially in your challenge to commit to 4,000 volunteer hours.

And finally, a special thank you to the nearly 7,000 Peace Corps Volunteers throughout 70 countries worldwide at this precise moment. And to the more than 165,000 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who have served since 1961—great Americans. And I look forward to meeting a great number of them in the coming years. It’s a great honor for me.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of the United States.

(Applause)
