Short Biography

Lisa Ohm has an M.A. from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in German Language and Literature. She specialized in the areas of Nineteenth-Century German Literature, the Romantic Period, the Classical Drama of Goethe and Schiller, Contemporary Literature, and Feminist Criticism.

Prior to coming to CSB/SJU in 1988, she had a one-year position as a visiting professor at California State University in Chico. She also taught German as a teaching assistant during graduate school.

In addition to German, Lisa speaks Spanish and French, languages she learned while serving two terms in the U.S. Peace Corps in Bolivia, South America, and Tunisia, North Africa, prior to her entry into graduate school. During her Peace Corps service she taught English as a Second Language, which she continues to teach in intensive summer programs on campus for international students.

Lisa’s research topics are gender roles in a cultural context, especially the role of young heroines, in 19th-century literature, and the female Bildungsroman. In Spring 1999 her translation of and introduction to The Life of High Countess Gritta von Ratsinourhouse was published by the University of Nebraska Press. Gritta was written in the early 1840s by a mother-daughter collaboration, the German women writers Bettine von Arnim and her daughter Gisela.

During the summers of 1996, 1997 and 1998 Lisa has had the opportunity to develop her research on young heroines by visits to Zurich, Switzerland, and her interest in contemporary literature by attendance at seminars in Berlin and Leipzig on German writers since unification.

Since 1993, Lisa has taught Elementary German 111 and 112, Intermediate German 211, Introduction to German Literature 212, German Conversation and Composition 311 and 312, Topics in German Culture and Civilization GERM 344, 19th-Century German Literature, Romanticism. In the Core program she has taught both First-Year Symposium and Senior Seminar .

In 1990 and 2000, Lisa directed the campus semester abroad program in Salzburg, Austria, and during January Term 1999 she l directed a UMAIE program to Berlin and Prague.
