past occupations & accomplishments

Started the Waboos Web Design & Graphics firm, December, 1999 to present.

Director of Training, Computer Mechanix, Inc., October 1997 to December, 1999. As a member of the Professional Staff, primary responsibilities included designing and teaching computer courses (MS Windows NT, Windows 95/98, Computer Basics, MS Office, MS Outlook, MS FrontPage, MS Publisher, Corel Word Perfect Suite, Lotus, CorelDraw, PhotoPaint, and Adobe Photoshop) On-Site and Private computer training for individuals, schools and corporations, and managing the Training Center. I assumed a key role in the conception and design of the training center itself including room design, layout and computer hardware. Other responsibilities included advertising and general organizational tasks, public relations and Virtual Private Network demonstration set-ups.

Independent contract work for Dr. Neil Cumberlidge (NMU) June, 1996 through June, 1997. I was responsible for creating and documenting scientific drawings of freshwater crabs found in Liberia and Uganda, with funding obtained through a grant. These drawings supported Dr. Cumberlidge's research, and will be published.

Received the Excellence in Education Award through NMU, Spring, 1996-a grant based on academic scholarship.

Independent contract work for Dr. Melissa Hearn, September through December, 1994. I was responsible for researching and ordering

books and materials on Native American culture, literature, history,

etc. for the Olson Library at Northern Michigan University with

funding obtained through a grant, in preparation for the new Native American Studies program.

Peace Corps Volunteer, Botswana, Africa, 1993 - 1994. In the remote village of Kang (in the Kalahari) I taught thirty-two periods of

English per week, prepared my students for their Junior Certificate

and Cambridge Examinations, and developed and supervised an Art

Club for the students. I am also proficient in Botswana's national language, Setswana.

Graduate Teaching Assistant at Northern Michigan University (Department of English), August, 1992 through May, 1993; August 1995 through April, 1996. I designed and prepared my own syllabus, chose texts, and taught EN 111, a freshman-level composition course, in conjunction with the First Year Experience Program (designed to promote retention levels, more productive study habits, and greater awareness of the academic community for incoming freshmen) at NMU.

Researched and documented the works of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft per request of two professors to ascertain whether or not his work was suitable for instructive material in NMU's developing Native American Studies program, Winter, 1993.

Selected by the English Department at NMU to submit a paper on Michael Dorris and Louise Erdrich's novel, Crown of Columbus, which was accepted by, and presented at, the Popular Culture Association Conference in New Orleans, April 7-10, 1993.

Counselor at the Clear Lake Education Center, Spring, 1993 and Spring, 1996. Here, I served as a counselor and instructor for promising high school students in the sciences. I assisted the students with their written projects completed during their stay at the Center and acted as a mentor.

Writing Fellow at NMU, August, 1991 through May, 1992. I was nominated and selected by the English Department to tutor two courses (Philosophy and Art History) for two semesters. My primary responsibilities included editing student papers and coaching students with their writing.

Curator's Assistant at the Marquette County Historical Society,

Marquette, Michigan, June, 1982 through August, 1991. Duties

included researching, writing script, collecting artifacts, and

installing exhibits; researching, cataloging and caring for artifacts;

maintaining the museum's photographic collection; artwork; and

various public relations. I also managed the museum's gift shop

(ordering stock, consignment items, bookkeeping, shop displays,

sales, etc.) during my last year of employment at the museum.

professional organizations:

Keweenaw Industrial Council, Member since September 1997. This organization is dedicated to revitalizing business in the Keweenaw Peninsula and promoting an influx of high-tech companies in our local area.

Amnesty International, Faculty Advisor, August 1992 through May 1993. Popular Culture Association, March 1993 through March 1994.

National Council of Teachers of English, August 1992 through August 1993.

United States Peace Corps, 1993 - 1994: Botswana. Present status: Returned Peace Corps Volunteer in good standing.

Article on the home Frank Lloyd Wright built in Marquette, Michigan, published in Harlow's Wooden Man, a quarterly publication by the Marquette County Historical Society.

Designed the cover for Harlow's Wooden Man.

Designed a dust jacket for Kenneth D. LaFayette's historical book, Flaming Brands: Fifty Years of Iron Making in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Designed various promotional and advertising materials for the Marquette County Historical Society.

Freelance artwork for various local businesses.

interests:

Graphic design; creative and technical writing; traveling; playing

(and working) on my computer with graphics programs and designing Web pages, Native American culture, mythology, history, literature,

etc.; African folklore and literature; mythology; art and crafts

(pottery, painting, sculpture, jewelry, etc.); gardening; and spending

as much time as possible hiking and exploring in the woods with my three dogs and cat (who thinks she's a dog).
