Michael has worked as a professional international/intercultural educator for over 35 years in the private and public sectors, beginning with his service as a US Peace Corps Volunteer English Teacher in Turkey (1965-1967). He has an extensive experiencce as an intercultural trainer and training consultant having worked with Fortune 500 companies, universities in the U.S. and abroad, non-profit/community organizations, national planning and education ministries of education, and public school districts. Over the course of his career, he has lived and worked in Turkey, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Kenya, and Hong Kong. His research activities include co-directing the Maximizing Study Abroad Through Language and Culture Strategies project (with Prof. Andrew Cohen), and, for the past six years, directing the Culture and Language Project both under the auspices of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA). These projects have focused on how culture can be taught and how intercultural competence can be facilitated in second language courses at home and abroad.

An active scholar, he has edited two volumes on intercultural education and culture learning: Cross-Cultural Orientation: New Conceptualizations and Applications (1986) and Education for the Intercultural Experience (1993). He is the co-author (with Andrew Cohen) of three volumes, now in press, on language and culture learning strategies for study abroad: Maximizing Study Abroad: A Student’s Guide to Strategies for Language and Culture Learning and Use, Maximizing Study Abroad: A Study Abroad Program Coordinator’s Guide to Strategies for Language and Culture Learning and Use, and Maximizing Study Abroad: A Language Instructor’s Guide to Strategies for Language and Culture Learning and Use.
