Jean A. Zukowski/Faust is a professor of applied linguistics and TESL at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. She has been at NAU since 1984, with two years on leave of absence to head the education program of Poland Peace Corps in 1990-1992, for which she was awarded the MedaB Komisiji Edukacji Narodowej, (Medal of Honor, from the Ministry of National Education, Poland). As a Peace Corps Volunteer and then independently as a teacher, she lived in Turkey for eight years. Professor Zukowski/Faust has written more than twenty-five textbooks for English language learners. She is a frequent plenary speaker and workshop presenter at state, national, and international conferences. She presently serves as a Director-at-Large of TESOL’s Board of Directors; she is a long-time member of the AZ-TESOL Executive Board, has chaired three AZ-TESOL state conferences, and served three years as editor and desktop publisher of the TESOL Newsletter.

Trip Report

In the presentations made in Turkey, there were several main focuses. One was the teaching of reading; in particular, the suggestions of ways to approach material, how to utilize reading texts for purposes of teaching particular reading skills, and how to respiral concepts and lexis. A second focus was the teaching of vocabulary, with emphasis on building depth of meaning and awareness of related words. Another focus was the use of the native language in teaching English, including exploration of the overlapping and exclusivity of meanings that are likely to occur between words that are generally considered translations. The last major focus included explorations of the culture-specific critical thinking patterns of English and Turkish, ways to bridge those thought pattern differences, and exercises to bring conscious awareness those aspects that define clear thinking in the international English-speaking community.

The program in Turkey included

* a workshop at Marmara University (Feb. 5)

* 2 workshops at Bahçesehir University (Feb. 6)

* a visit and consultation at Sabanci University (Feb. 7)

* a workshop at Bilgi University (Feb. 7)

* 3 workshops at Gaziantep University (Feb. 8-9)

* lecture for INGED (Turkish English Teachers Association) (Feb. 12)

* lecture at Bilkent University (Feb. 13)

* workshop at Kara Harp Okulu (Turkish Military Academy) (Feb. 13)

* workshop at Middle East Technical University (Feb. 14)

* participation in Bilkent University Conference (Feb. 15-17)

* plenary address at Bilkent University Conference (Feb. 15)

* workshop at Bilkent University Conference (Feb. 17)

The success of the trip is in a large part attributable to the organizing and arranging, as well as the hospitality, of Tom and Kathleen Kral in Turkey and Cathy Siemonh in Washington. The hospitality that was extended to me was warm, sincere, and wonderful. I appreciate all of the work that went before, during, and after this trip because I know what a challenge making these arrangements can be. I feel confident that in some way Turkish-American relations were improved and some understanding increased because of the teacher-to-teacher communications in Istanbul, Gaziantep, and Ankara. The trip began on February 3 with departure from Flagstaff, and ended on February 20, with a safe return home.

Jeanne.....Congratulations and warm hugs from an old friend. I'm so pleased to see the vast extent of your success and am delighted beyond measure to have found you this way on the internet. I'm learning to "compute" slowly...with help from a class at the senior center. Our field of peers seems to be thinning...and I greatly regret having lost touch with all the special friends of Turkey II.
Would love to hear from you...and all the others, too.
