Palm Beach County Trade Group Spearheads Peace Corps Efforts

NORTH PALM BEACH, FLORIDA — July 19, 2001 — Nearly $30,000 worth of sporting goods are headed overseas to three developing countries — thanks to donations by thirteen U.S. sporting goods companies. This effort is supporting a charitable endeavor coordinated by the North Palm Beach-based Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) and the U.S. State Department. The beneficiaries of this initiative are sports programs in Armenia, Uzbekitstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Recognizing that 80% of the world's population lives in developing countries, SGMA worked with the U.S. State Department to ship needed sports products overseas under the banner "SGMA USA Sporting Goods to Go." The products were delivered to U.S. Peace Corps representatives in Armenia, Uzbekitstan and Kyrgyzstan. Future shipments are planned to other locations.

The partnership between SGMA, SGMA members, the State Department, and the Peace Corps is focused on international sports development, as well as building a U.S. community outreach program in developing countries — with the goal of increasing sports participation, healthy lifestyles, and a commitment to peace and fair play.

The contributing companies include Balazs Boxing (Allentown, PA); Benetton Sports System (Bordentown, NJ); Danskin (New York, NY); Diamond Sports (Cypress, CA); Everlast Sports Manufacturing (New York, NY); Kwik Goal (Quakertown, PA); Markwort Sporting Goods Company (St. Louis, MO); Russell Athletic (Alexander City, AL); Score American Soccer Company (Wilmington, CA); Sportcraft, Ltd. (Mt. Olive, NJ); Sprint Aquatics (San Luis Obispo, CA); Women's National Basketball Association (New York, NY) and Worth, Inc. (Tullahoma, TN). These companies donated a wide variety of items, such as boxing accessories; softball bats/balls/gloves/mitts; swimming goggles/caps/ kickboards; volleyballs/ nets; soccer balls/jerseys; tennis racquets; table tennis balls/ nets/paddles; baseballs/bats/uniforms; basketballs/ shorts/jerseys; and an assortment of women's sports apparel (tank tops, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, shorts, pants, unitards, bras, and vests).

Sporting goods companies supporting this international goodwill effort shipped their donations to a central U.S. warehouse. Sports products will be sent to overseas Peace Corps posts requesting specific items. The collection point was Panalpina Company; 22750 Glenn Drive; Sterling, Virginia 20164. During the current initiative, the U.S. Government is paying for the overseas shipment under its program of humanitarian assistance.

All companies contributing to this international program will be honored in 2002 at The Super Show® (January 21-23 in Las Vegas, NV). Coordinating this project is Maria Stefan, SGMA's Vice President of Global Business Development, who can be reached by phone at 561-840-1150 or Email: mssgma@aol.com.

The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA), owner of The Super Show®, is the trade association of North American manufacturers, producers, and distributors of sports apparel, athletic footwear, fitness, and sporting goods equipment. SGMA represents and supports its members through programs and strategies for sports participation, market intelligence and public policy.
