Maria Termini

Visual Art: art in many media as a celebration of the beauty of nature and as a prayer for the earth

Song: versatile professional singer-songwriter on guitar and keyboards, in original, ethnic/folk, and classical styles in shows appearing: Sept29:2001 (song), May4:2002 (visual art; see photo)

Maria Termini has an M.F.A. from Catholic University and has worked extensively as an artist, teacher, and singer-songwriter. Her CD "Leaf Dancer" has recently been released and features many of her own songs as well as folk and classical music. As a visual artist she has specialized in printmaking and is the author of the book "Silk-Screening" published by Prentice-Hall. She has exhibited widely in both one-person and group shows. Maria names beauty, adventure, wonder, and curiousity as the strong threads in the ongoing rich weaving of her life. She has traveled extensively in Central America, worked with Habitat for Humanity in Nicaragua and Boston, lived in Hawaii and in a one-room schoolhouse in the White Mountain National Forest in Maine, and worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sucre, Bolivia.

After her Sept 29 appearance at the chapel's Soul Stirring show, Maria will have an delightful exhibit of colorful silk-screening, collage, weaving, and water-color entitled "In My World" at the Gutman Library, Havard School of Design, 6 Appian Way, Cambridge, from Sept 30 to Oct 13, 2001.

Maria's 17 song CD "Lead Dancer" is a joyful mix of originals, folk music, hymns, and classical opera. She also shows the influence of her recent service with the U.S. Peace Corps in Bolivia, working with children and singing as the soprano soloist with the Coro Antonio Auza in Sucre. Artist Statement:

Music is the love of my life and has always provided me with a wealth of melodies, themes, and inspiration throughout my life which is an adventurous journey of the body and soul to the near and far corners of the earth.

As I do make art, I experience wonder and excitement as I follow a brush loaded with paint, play with arrangments of brightly colored shapes and images, weave fabric strands together, squeeze richly colored ink through a screen, and more. As I work, I aspire to be open to the spirit - to be inspired. I believe that the state of being inspired means being closer to God. The spirit flies around me in an air of wonder, color, and joy as I create, as I do the work I need to do.

Silk screen print by Maria Termini, 10" x 12"

As I get older and have had more and more the experience of being an artist, I feel that spirit and wonder are at the heart of my religious experience. My creative expression of spirit and wonder is religious for me. It does not deal with traditional religious subject matter , but rather, my art goes to new places of universal understanding of the language of color, shapes, line, and image that we all know innately and that can transcend the material of which it is made. My art is spiritual anyway in this sense. But I don't set out to do "spiritual" art. It will happen if I am open to the spirit. I also view my art as a celebration of the beauty of nature and as a prayer for this fragile work of art we live on, earth.
