December 9, 2002: Only one more week left for getting those Christmas gifts from Bulgaria! Order now and you can still get that unique gift in time for Yule. Remember, you can specify a different mailing address when you order, and have your packages sent directly to the gift recipient. By the way, it's easy to make several different orders, with a different address for each one. And it costs exactly the same!

Your order from America is normally in the mail before you get up the next morning! The time difference between America and Bulgaria is 7 hours (east coast) or 10 hours (west coast). We package and ship all items first thing in the morning. If you order something at 10 p.m., it will be on the way to you before 2 a.m. your time (9 a.m. Bulgaria time)!

Winter Crafts Fair. And if you're wondering why our stock is a little low right now, here's the reason! Not only are we just starting out, but the annual Crafts Fair ("Best in Bulgaria") in Sofia is also underway at the present time, and (of course) a number of our artisans are also featured there. People like Nedelcho (carved wood implements) and Irina (painted silk scarves) have only a limited amount of products on hand because each item is painstakingly created as a unique work of art. We were just in Sofia, by the way, and people are buying their works like the proverbial hotcakes. Ironically, our stocks will be much larger after the Christmas season -- when our artisans have a chance to replenish their inventories.

And more icons. We just got in a few more icons this week. These are done in a slightly different style, what we would call "primitive" in the States. Instead of copying the ancient icons (which is the tradition), these icons, by Zhana Jordanova, a 24-year-old interpreter from the town of Yambol, are presented in an individualistic presentation. Both types of icons are common in Bulgaria, and now you have a choice! Both Zhana's icons and those by Ognyan Petkov Dragoikov are available at our ICON STORE

Peace Corps Shirts. We just got in another batch of Peace Corps Bulgaria shirts from the PCV Orphanage Committee. A better selection of sizes (including one XXL sweatshirt -- a real rarity!) Remember, all proceeds go to Bulgarian orphanages (See our note below under "News From the Town of Straldja") See the T-shirts and sweatshirts HERE.

NEWS FROM THE TOWN OF STRALDJA

More About Orphanages The local orphanage in Straldja is typical. Operated by the Ministry of Education, the "boarding school" or "internat" receives only enough funds for a basic education and for the bare minimums of food and lodging. There are no "extras" available and there is always a need for basic clothing and for other necessities. A recently completed project by Peace Corps volunteer Rel Davis, funded entirely by people in America, provided equipment for two new vocational education programs at the school -- a class for cooks and one for metal and lathe-workers. You can see some photos at this website: http://straldja.freeservers.com/internat.htm. This project was funded through the Peace Corps Partnership Program. If you, or any organization you know of, would like to help out projects like this, please go to: http://www.peacecorps.gov/contribute/projects/index.cfm. We have two other projects in Straldja under this program -- the "hizha" and the women's cooperative. Thanks!
