PROFESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS

Postdoctoral Fellow, Jun. 2002-Aug. 2003. Wrote NSF proposal to conduct incubation experiments on river waters of the Amazon to determine if heterotrophic respiration rates are a function of elemental and biochemical composition of organic matter fractions. Supervisors: Ron Benner, University of South Carolina; and Alex Krusche, Centro de Energia Nuclear na Agricultura (CENA), Brazil.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Principal Collaborator, 2000-present. Initiated and wrote proposal to use radiocarbon measurements from the Amazon to constrain river organic matter model. Measured delta14C of 120 organic and inorganic carbon fractions at Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

River Research Assistant, 1994-present. Organized and led three expedition teams to sample lowland Amazon terra-firme streams (Jun.-Jul. 1995), mesoscale watersheds in Rondonia, Brazil (Jun.-Jul. 1996) and Amazon headwater tributaries in Peru (Oct.-Nov. 1996). Oversaw laboratory analysis of these samples. Trained and managed laboratory technicians. In collaboration with graduate student Emilio Mayorga, constructed a geo-referenced Access database of available data from Amazon rivers in order to explore and synthesize patterns in organic matter processing. Designed and conducted experiments on organic matter sorption to mineral surfaces. Carbon in the Amazon River Experiment (CAMREX) and Aquatic Organic Geochemistry groups.

Oceanographic Research Assistant, 1996-2001. Conducted 15NO3 uptake incubation experiments during the Zonal Flux cruise aboard the R/V Thompson (Apr.-May 1996). Evaluated multivariate statistical relationships of nitrate uptake rates (i.e. oceanic new production) with other properties from nine cruises to the tropical Pacific. Developed mathematical model, by coupling nitrogen and iron mass balances, to explain observed relationships between new production and mixed-layer nitrate concentrations.

Sustainable Agriculture Extension Agent, U.S. Peace Corps, 1992-1994. Developed an elephant pest management program for the WWF Dzanga-Sangha Rainforest Reserve Project, Central African Republic. Also assisted various researchers in studies of forest elephants, lowland gorillas, small carnivores and rodents.

Laboratory and Field Technician, 1989-1991. Aquatic Ecology (Carol L. Folt), Forestry (David R. Peart), Organic Chemistry Student Lab Development (Steve Teeter). Dartmouth College.

Tropical Biology Field Studies, Winter 1990. Designed and executed small ecological projects in the rainforests of Costa Rica and on the coral reefs of Jamaica while participating in Tropical Biology Foreign Study Program, Dartmouth College.

LANGUAGES

In order of proficiency: English, French, Sango (Central African Republic) and Portuguese.

REVIEWER

Journals: Biogeochemistry, Limnology and Oceanography, Journal of Environmental Quality, Water Research.
