LAS CRUCES -- Katherine (Kari) Bachman, of Las Cruces, began work Dec. 6 as the coordinator of New Mexico State University's Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program.

The program, funded with federal food stamp dollars and administered through NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service, provides nutrition, food preparation and food safety education to low-income families at 20 sites throughout New Mexico.

Bachman received a bachelor's degree in political science from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1988, and a master's degree in agricultural and Extension education from NMSU in 1995.

"I got interested in Extension work during my years in the Peace Corps in Africa, where I taught people how to raise fish," Bachman said.

Bachman was stationed in Bandundu, Zaire from September 1988 to February 1990 with the Peace Corps' Aquaculture Extension Program.

During summer 1995, Bachman was director of the youth program for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program with Doña Ana County Extension. She hired, trained and supervised four nutrition educators and designed a hands-on series of nutrition lessons for youth.

From January until October 1996, Bachman was a temporary food stamp program coordinator and video assistant for Extension. She wrote scripts and assisted in translating Spanish nutrition videotapes.

Bachman also has experience as a nutrition and life skills educator at White Sands Missile Range.

She is interested in Spanish and Latin American language and culture. She is fluent in Spanish and Kikongo and conversant in French. Her other hobby is cooking.
