About me!

I'm a graduate student in Mass Communication at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. I'm currently doing Ph.D. coursework. My focus is on Appalachian media, history, and cultural geography.

I recently completed my MA thesis, a study about the music of Carlos Mejia Godoy, a Nicaraguan singer who was influential in mobilizing Nicaraguans during the Sandinista Revolution.

I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 1997-1999 in El Salvador. I worked on latrine construction projects and worked as an English teacher. I also started and environmental club for elementary kids in San Rafael, the town where I lived for 2 years. I was able to use entertainment-education strategies with the club and wrote an environmental songbook as a result.

Much of my spare time is spent playing double bass. I enjoy playing jazz and classical music and have composed a few things of my own. I am currently the bassist in a OU's Jazz combo. I also play the guitar and the banjo. For the banjo, I've been working on the "Scruggs style" fingerpicking. It gets better everyday. I've been playing a few folk songs and making up songs of my own too. I enjoy baseball, playing golf, reading American history, issues regarding Appalachia, and issues about Latin America (particularly about El Salvador and Nicaragua).

Dawn is my wife. She is an instuctor for the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE). We enjoy hiking, biking, tennis, and cross-country skiing when we get the chance (there's usually not much snow in Athens).

Bob is my dog. Bob is a bassett hound and is a star everywhere she goes (yes, Bob is a she). She is terribly spoiled and thinks that everyone is her
best friend.
