The day before yesterday was Peace Corps Day in the Gambia
The following was sent by Bassirou Dodou Drammeh, a Gambian citizen, to the email list GAMBIA-L in March of 1999.
"The day before yesterday was Peace Corps Day in the Gambia. And the GRTS did a great job in the manner in which it reported and analyzed the immeasurable contributions that these fine young American men and women are making towards the development of this little and far-away country from America.
"The fantastic job these people are doing in the fields of community work, local resource management, public health education, the teaching of science, mathematics and computers, particularly in the rural areas and sometimes under very difficult and taxing circumstances, deserves nothing but a standing ovation from every Gambian who cares about the developmental needs of this country. Already, four computer labs have been set up around the country by these fine young men and women, out of a projected eighteen by the year 2000; and countless rural women's groups in the length and breadth of the country are now managing their local resources in a much more organized and efficient manner as a result of skills, techniques and knowledge imparted to them by these great American heroes.
"For obvious reasons, there is no way that we Gambians could pay back these fine young men and women the vital technical assistance they are rendering our motherland. The least we could do, however, is to demonstrate to them and members of their families our profound sense of appreciation, friendship, respect and gratitude. That is precisely what I am doing here on behalf of my country and people. So,Thank You each and everyone of you, the Peace Corps who is presently serving or has ever served in the Gambia, and Thank You to all their families for their support and Thank You to America for making it possible for these angels to serve in our country."
