Dr. Scott Rosenberg

After graduating from Kenyon College I spent the next two years working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho. During this time I lived in a small village of about 50 people and worked on a cooperative farm growing vegetables. After returning from Lesotho, I earned my Master’s in International Affairs and African Studies from Ohio University. I went on to earn my Ph.D. in African and African-American history at Indiana University ( I defended my dissertation in May of 1998). From August 1995 to August 1996 and again in July of 1998 I had the opportunity to return to Lesotho to conduct research and visit old friends. Sadly, the agricultural cooperative is no longer together. Over the last three years I have taught African History, World History, and Race Relations at; the University of Louisville, Knox College, and Castleton State College. I am very excited about coming to Wittenberg in the fall of 2000. I plan to offer a wide range of African history courses: including two survey level classes, African Societies to 1500 and The Formation of Modern Africa, as well as upper level courses such as Settlers and Liberators of Southern Africa, and a class on twentieth century Africa which focuses on nationalism, ethnicity, and gender. I am also looking forward to offering classes on African-American history ( a survey course, as well as some upper level courses in the future, such as Women in the Civil Rights Movement). I also plan on offering a comparative race relations class which will focus on the United States and South Africa. I also look forward to working with students and the campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
