President Melvin Vulgamore will be joined at the podium during next month's commencement.

Roger Landrum, '59, distinguished alumnus and founder of Youth Service America, was named as an additional speaker after a request was made by Student Senate.

Anjali Thakur, Farmington Hills sophomore and student senator, drew up a letter to the Albion College Board of Trustees recommending that they add an additional commencement speaker.

The senate passed the letter unanimously with one abstention at their March 17 meeting. The letter also suggested that they consider the list of potential speakers voted on by the senior class.

Landrum was a final nominee on this list of possible speakers the senior class presented to Vulgamore.

The executive committee of the trustees however, chose Vulgamore as the commencement speaker to commemorate his years here as president.

Landrum will now share the job of speaking to the class of '97 with Vulgamore. He will also be presented with a degree of Doctor of Public Service.

In 1986 Landrum founded Youth Service America in Washington D.C., and it helps with training and technical aid to over 2,000 service organizations across the nation.

Money to start the program came from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek in the form of a five-year, $1 million grant.

"Roger Landrum pioneered the volunteer movement which has now swept across campuses in this country. His interest began while a student at Albion College working with the 'Earn, Learn and Play' program in the city, directed by Elkin Isaac who will be presenting him for the degree [of Doctor of Public Service]," said Vulgamore in a March 31 press release.

Landrum has been very busy since graduating from Albion. In 1961 he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria and since then has been the board president of the National Council of Retired Peace Corps volunteers.

He also founded The Teachers, Inc. and was president of this organization from 1968 when it was founded until 1972.

Through this private organization, young teachers were placed in public schools in cities such as New York and Washington D.C.

Landrum received his doctorate in human development from Harvard University and then wrote two books about national service.

He also spent time as a senior issues advisor to Senator Alan Cranston (D) from California, and then worked on strategies to achieve growth in the area of youth service, with the Ford Foundation.

"Roger has been a principal adviser to President Bush and his Points of Light Foundation and to President Clinton in setting up AmeriCorps and the National Commission on Service. He is an excellent choice to address the class of 1997, which has contributed so much to Albion's tradition of service," Vulgamore said in the same press release.
