Julian Martin (right) poses with the "amazing athletes" he coached while teaching chemistry and math in Nigeria. Martin was the first Peace Corps volunteer from West Virginia. After three months of training in California, the St. Albans native flew out of Kanawha Airport on Dec. 26, 1961, on his way to a two-year stint in the West African country. Martin said he knew he had a winning team when he organized the track meet against schools where other Peace Corps volunteers worked. He still is astonished by the physical condition of his team, considering that half of the infants in Nigeria died by age 2 from protein deficiencies. Martin is now retired from Duvall High School in Lincoln County where he taught for 21 years. (Photo courtesy of Martin)
