ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) -- The United States ordered non-emergency embassy staff, their families and Peace Corps volunteers out of Ethiopia on Thursday in response to the eruption of fighting with Eritrea.
The pullout comes six days after the two neighbors in the Horn of Africa renewed fighting in a border dispute that killed 1,000 people in May.
"Two days ago, we were asking all non-emergency staff and their families to volunteer to leave Ethiopia. Today we are telling them to do so," said the U.S. Embassy spokesman in Addis Ababa, who asked not to be identified.
He would not give a number on those embassy staff who left or those who remain. He said Peace Corps volunteers were included in the order.
A group of 57 Peace Corps volunteers arrived in neighboring Kenya on Thursday. One volunteer, who asked not to be identified, said they would be offered assignments in other countries.
